The Menlo boys' soccer team moved to within a victory of earning an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs following a penalty-kick shootout victory over visiting Harker on Wednesday. The match was tied 2-2 after regulation and two overtime periods before the Knights won on penalty kicks, 9-8.
The reward for the Knights (11-4-6) is yet another playoff game on Friday, to decide the league's second automatic berth. Menlo will host King's Academy, a 1-0 winner over Eastside Prep, at Menlo College at 3 p.m.
Menlo won an incredible match after the two team could not be separated after 80 minutes of regular play and another 20 minutes of extra time. Menlo senior Michael Walker opened the scoring with a goal off a cross from Brenden McMorrow. Menlo then went 2-0 up in the first half with a scrappy goal after more good approach play and some pinball in the Harker box resulted in an own goal. Harker responded immediately with a strong free kick to make the score 2-1 at half. After Harker tied it and the teams battled scorelessly in overtime, Menlo grabbed an early lead in PKs before finally winning on successful kicks by Jackson Badger and finally Jack Hessel.
