The Menlo girls' soccer team will play for an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs when the Knights face Crystal Springs-Uplands on Friday at Skyline College in San Bruno at 3 p.m. The contest matches the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) third-place finisher (Menlo) against the Skyline Division champ.
No matter what the outcome is, it's likely that Menlo (8-2-2, 12-4-5) will still receive an at-large berth based on its overall mark and the strong competition it faced in the WBAL. On Tuesday, the Knights concluded the regular season with a 1-0 win over host Mercy-Burlingame.
Menlo controlled play throughout the match and outshot Mercy, 25-3, but struggled to score. With 12 minutes left in the match, Katie Howard's low shot was blocked by Mercy's diving keeper and Menlo's Casey Finch got the rebound and scored. Menlo coach Donoson Fitzgerald acknowledged defenders Elitah Petty and Natalie Johnson for their efforts.
West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division)
Menlo 0 1 -- 1
Mercy-Burlingame 0 0 -- 0
Menlo -- Finch (Howard).
Records: Menlo 8-2-2 (12-4-5)
