In a match it absolutely had to win in order to have any chance at winning its first-ever league championship, the Sacred Heart Prep girls' soccer team got a goal from senior Kira Abe with under 24 minutes to play to shock first-place Priory, 1-0, Tuesday in a West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) match.
The Gators (9-0-2, 12-3-5) came into the match trailing the Panthers (9-2, 13-5-1) by one point with only the showdown at hand and one more league match on Thursday. All Priory needed to virtually clinch the title was a tie.
Both teams, however were aggressive from the start and kept up the attack throughout. The Gators finally broke through when Lizzy Weisman got loose in the Priory penalty box and took a shot that bounced off Priory keeper Dani Boross and back to Abe, who followed in the rebound and Sacred Heart Prep had its lead.
SHP nearly scored again a minute later when Weisman lofted a shot over the head of Boross, who retreated quickly and grabbed the ball before another SHP player could knock it home. With 17:07 left to play, Abe scored only to have it waved off by an offsides call.
Sacred Heart Prep senior Emily Denton shadowed Priory's top scoring threat, Adriana Cortes, throughout the game and held her to four shots in the first half and fewer than that after halftime. Sophomore Geena Grauman also was a standout defender for the Gators, to help make things easier for senior keeper Abby Jones, who came out of goal numerous times to prevent Priory scoring chances.
Both teams have one match remaining, Priory visiting Mercy-Burlingame and Sacred Heart Prep visiting King's Academy. Both squads have clinched automatic Central Coast Section berths, no matter in which order they finish. It's likely both will wind up in Division III and quite possibly face each other again. Priory would like that because its only two league losses are to the Gators this season.
