Vanguard 4, Menlo College 0
Date of competition: Thursday, October 31, 2019
Going on the road for the final time during the regular season, the Menlo College women's soccer team knew it would have its hands full. On Thursday, No. 13 Vanguard dazzled en route to a 4-0 win over the Oaks, improving the Lions to 10-2-2 (6-1) while the Oaks drop to 5-7-1 (3-4) and are tied for the fifth seed in the standings.
Vanguard got off to a fast start, dominating possession early in the game. The Lions struck at the 5:19 mark. Marielisa Hallam launched a ball from deep that soared in off the bottom of the crossbar and in for the 1-0 Vanguard lead. The Lions kept the pressure on with Kelsey Bryant, who scored an unassisted goal at 18:55.
Lots of Defense The Oaks' defense was tested from the onset. Goalie Michelle Gonzalez tied a season-high with 11 saves and the Oaks defense had to defend 31 total shots from the Lions, compared to eight from Menlo. Anchored by Mercedes Beckham, Haleigh Stoddard, Megan Sequeira, and Camryn Collins, the score could have been worse had they not been able to fight off the barrage from the Lions.
Menlo was able to put four shots on goal in contests, coming from three different players: Kori-Ann Koverman (2), Haley Bullard, and Ariadna Ramirez. The Oaks got the ball away from the Lions on a few chances during the second half, but were not able to convert in being shutout for the third time in a loss.>Br>
