The Palo Alto boys’ soccer team capped one of the finest league seasons in school history by blanking host Milpitas, 2-0, on Friday in a SCVAL De Anza Division match. The Vikings finished the regular season at 11-0-1 in league (19-1-2 overall) while allowing just one goal in 12 matches. Senior keeper Peter Johnson played every league contest, giving up just the single goal to Milpitas the first time the teams met.

Despite the shutout, Paly coach Don Briggs said “This was a tough battle” despite the fact the Vikings clinched the league title two games ago. “However, the team was motivated to have an undefeated league season and felt a responsibility to do make the final week of competition close.”

With four teams battling for the two remaining automatic Central Coast Section berths, Briggs believed it was his team’s duty to play everyone honest and make the potential playoff teams work.

Paly had another outstanding defensive game against Milpitas, which began the day tied for second with Gunn at 5-4-2. The Trojans were the league’s No. 2 team in scoring (20 goals), second only to the Vikings’ league-leading 27 goals. The Paly defense turned Milpitas' strong attack away with nice play by John Christopherson, Ryan Holland, Mike Hanabusa, and Mark Raftrey. Johnson had four saves. Hanabusa had another top defensive game and kept the league-leading scorer out of the net. Milpitas' Ceja Ramiro had 14 goals up to this contest and only had one shot on goal today.

Johnson, meanwhile, not only had a great league season but he has allowed just five goals (including two penalty kicks) 21 matches this season. He missed one game for a club tournament at the beginning of the season.

Sophomore John Richardson scored the winning goal in the first half off an assist from freshman Gerrit Vanzyll, who was brought up to replace the injured Spencer Sims. Junior John Anderton made it 2-0 off an assist from Kris Hoglund.

Milpits 0 0 -- 0

Records: Palo Alto 11-0-1 (19-1-2); Milpitas 5-4-2 (9-7-4)
