Date of competition: Saturday, October 12, 2019
By Ryan Barnett
The Menlo College women’s soccer team completed its first Golden State Athletic Conference road trip with a 2-1 loss to The Master's in Santa Clarita on Saturday. The game started an hour late due to fires throughout the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys. Both offenses made up for it by coming out strong and all the scoring was done in the first half. The Mustangs improve to 7-3-3 and 2-1 in GSAC play while the Oaks fall to 3-5-1 and 1-2 in the conference.
Down Early, Claw Back Late
The Oaks were 2-0 early. In the 11th minute, Kayla Sims connected from 10 yards out and 12 minutes later Sarah Stead lined a corner that found Payton Williams, who connected with Suzanne Mabie, who fired a shot through traffic to find the back of the net. The Oaks continued to pressure offensively and earned a corner kick in the 32nd minute. During ensuing play, The Master's was called for a hand ball in the box, giving Menlo a penalty kick. Kori-Ann Koverman lined up the shot and buried it past Lacey Lehman to make it 2-1.
Early 2nd Half Opportunities
The Oaks came out firing in the second half and had their two best equalizer opportunities in the first 11 minutes. Koverman was unmarked, with the ball, and had a one-on-one with Lehman. Koverman drove right and fired left, but Lehman moved to her left at the last minute to snag the save. Two minutes later, the Oaks had another scoring opportunity. Koverman received a throw in deep in the attacking third. She drove into the box and grounded a cross to an open Robyn Rowley, who fired a shot high.
Gonzalez Keeps it Level
After being beaten twice early, Michelle Gonzalez finished with seven saves, including four to keep the Oaks within a goal. The Mustangs came out firing, letting loose five shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. Two of those connected, but the damage could have been a lot worse if it weren't for the sure handed Gonzalez. After the Mustangs second goal, Gonzalez would not be beaten, although being tested on numerous occasions.
The Oaks return home Thursday for a game against Ottawa Arizona. The Spirit are 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in GSAC play. The Oaks fell to OUAZ last year 4-0 in Surprise. The match is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
