With the outcome of the match riding on Max Simon, the Palo Alto wrestler responded with a 10-2 decision at 160 pounds to lift the Vikings to a 35-31 dual-match victory over host Gunn in a SCVAL De Anza Division showdown on Thursday night. The Vikings improved to 4-1 in league while the Titans fell to 2-3. Both teams have one match remaining before the SCVAL Championships get under way on Feb. 14 at Palo Alto.

Gunn rallied from a 21-3 deficit to tie the match at 31 heading into the final weight class. Simon took control in the second period, scoring a takedown for a 5-2 advantage. He added another takedown and a near-fall in the third period to win going away.

The meet started at 171 pounds, pitting each team's best wrestlers against each other -- Gunn's Zack Blumenfeld against Paly's Patrick Sheehan, who normally wrestles at 160 pounds. Despite the weight difference, Sheehan pulled out a 2-1 victory to get the Vikings rolling. Paly freshman Ryan Oshima pulled out a big victory at 145 pounds after nearly being pinned by Clayton Post. Oshima found an opening to pin Post and give the Vikings a 31-25 lead.
