The Menlo girls' soccer team kept its slim hopes alive for an automatic Central Coast Section playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over host Castilleja in a West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) match Thursday at the Mayfield Soccer Complex.

The Knights (6-2-2, 10-4-5) have 20 points with two matches remaining. The best they can finish is with 26. The Gators need second-place Sacred Heart Prep (8-0-2) to lose its remaining two matches just to force a tie for second place. If the Gators win or tie in their final two, Menlo will face the Skyline Division champ in a playoff to decide the final berth for CCS.

Menlo was locked in a 1-1 halftime battle after a penalty kick by senior Casey Finch was matched by a free kick from Castilleja freshman Emily Mosbacher. In the second half, Menlo dominated. Nicole Fasola scored on a one-on-one with the keeper after a nice feed from Madi Shove. The Knights' Ginny Miller later his a 25-yard shot off another set up by Shove. Natalie Johnson and Maggie Brown helped spark the Knights' defense.
