Westmont 3, Menlo College 2
Date of competition: Saturday, October 5, 2019
It very well could have been the game of the year in the GSAC and it stood as the 24th-ranked Menlo College men's soccer conference opener. Hosting fourth-ranked Westmont College, Menlo certainly had revenge on the mind after the Warriors bounced the Oaks from the GSAC playoffs one year ago. Westmont scored 5:45 into overtime to win, 3-2. Westmont is 8-1 (2-0) while Menlo suffers its second straight loss and falls to 6-3 (0-1).
Gomes, Goal 1
Menlo did not wait long to become the aggressor, coming out firing early and often and keeping possession for most of the first half. The Oaks scored 12:10 into the game when Michael Weber hooked up with Giovanny Gomes for his second goal of the season. The passing was beautiful as the Oaks moved it up the spine of the defense, and Gomes took his rolling shot to the back post, hugging the ground.
The Warrior Way
Westmont responded with a score 2:40 into the second half as a foul led to a penalty kick for the Warriors. With under 13 minutes remaining, the Warriors goals-leader Tyler Young was open in the box on a cross from Isaiah Bolton and scored to make it 2-1 Warriors. After getting one shot in the first half, Westmont responded with eight in the second half.
Gomes, Goal 2
With the Oaks on the prowl in the waning minutes, a Westmont foul in the box with 3:35 remaining gifted the Oaks a chance to send the game into overtime. Gomes took the PK for the Oaks and sent it in the opposite direction of Delgado to tie the game up and put the Oaks crowd into a frenzy. It marked the second goal of the game and third on the year for Gomes.
Agony of Defeat
Westmont only needed one overtime to take down the Oaks in heartbreaking fashion. Menlo's Andres Zimmermann came out to challenge and got a piece of the ball but it was sent over him and into the net as the Warriors vaulted off their bench with a 3-2 win.
Up Next ...
Menlo must shake off its first conference loss of the season before its next game, a road game with San Diego Christian on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Oaks hit the road for a pair of games, with the Hawks and The Master's University.
