The Palo Alto girls' soccer team picked a good time to pull things together, moving back into contention for an automatic Central Coast Section playoff berth with a 2-0 victory over host Cupertino on Wednesday.
The Vikings improved to 5-4-2 in the SCVAL De Anza Division (9-6-4 overall) and now have 17 points. Paly trails only co-leaders Monta Vista (6-2-2) and Los Gatos (6-3-2), both of whom with 20 points. Homestead (5-5) trails Paly with 15 points. While the Vikings can finish with 20 points by beating visiting Mountain View on Friday at 3:30 p.m. to conclude the regular season, Homestead still can pass the Vikings by winning its final two matches. A win and a tie by the Mustangs, however, won't do it.
Paly's win at Cupertino marked the first time this season the Vikings have won on a natural grass field. Senior co-captain Jessie Duller helped provide the eventual winning goal when she passed to junior Maeve Stewart, who fired a rocket from 20 yards out for a 1-0 match in the 19th minute. In the second half, senior co-captain Sammi Bengston launched a missle of her own from the 30-yard line, which found the top left corner of the net. Duller was credited with the assist. Sophomore keeper Alex Kershner had four saves on the day.
Friday's final match will be Senior Day for Paly's Elizabeth Petit, Shaina Kaye, Sarah Brown, Amelia Alonis, Sydney Lundgren, Duller and Bengston.
