Varsity Girls Soccer
Gunn 3, Lynbrook 1
Date of competition: Wednesday, February 4, 2009
The Gunn girls' soccer team moved to within a victory of clinching the SCVAL El Camino Division championship following a 3-1 triumph over host Lynbrook on Wednesday in San Jose. The Titans improved to 8-0-2 in league (26 points) and 10-5-3 overall.
Gunn had hoped to wrap things up against Lynbrook, but second-place Saratoga (7-2-2 for 23 points) and third-place Santa Clara (6-1-3 for 21 points) also won on Wednesday. Saratoga has only one match remaining and thus can't finish with more than 26 points. Gunn hosts Santa Clara on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and can eliminate both teams with just a tie.
Against Lynbrook, Gunn scored in the 33rd minute when Eleanor Greely took a corner kick from the right side. The ball bounced around several players in the penalty area before Taylor Gardiner got her boot on it and placed it in the goal. Only three minutes later, Gardiner struck net again, this time receiving a pass from the right side from Melissa Sun and delivering it into the net.
Lynbrook made it a 2-1 game in the 56th minute of the second half, scoring off a penalty kick awarded for a tripping foul in the area. Gunn, however, made it 3-1 at the 66th minute when Emmiliese von Clemm made an overlapping run on the right side, received a ball from Libby Burch, and placed a low strike into the far left corner of the net for the final tally.
