Menlo College 301, Vanguard 304
Date of competition: Tuesday, September 10, 2019
The Menlo College men’s and women’s golf teams were victorious in a first-of-its-kind three-way match with Vanguard University and Hope International University in Long Beach on Tuesday. The Oaks begin their season on a strong note. The men won 301-304 (Vanguard)-315 (Hope) and the women won 332-375 (Hope)-412 (Vanguard).
Welcome to Menlo
While the Oaks have a strong returning crew, it was their newcomers who helped lead Menlo to victory. Fredrik Mangset is a native of Lommedalen, Norway, and one of five Norwegians on this year's roster for the men. He posted the top score of the day for the Oaks, firing a 74 in his first round of competition as an Oak. He was matched by another Oak from Norway: Anders Baumann. With the two posting the exact same score, it was easy for the Oaks pull ahead from the other squads. Finishing fourth among the Oaks was another newcomer, Gavin Haley, who shot a 78, which was matched by Jacob Flogstad.
From the Stars
"I felt good going out on the course today. Just tried to get my drives in the fairway; that was pretty much the main goal for today. I really liked the soft greens, and I was able to make some great wedges. I missed a few short putts, but it was not too bad. Overall, I'm happy playing a 74 in my first collegiate event." – Fredrik Mangset
"I was off to a fast start, two-under through five holes, and then finished at even on the first nine. I lost accuracy off the tee and couldn't keep it going on the back nine, finishing at 78. First tournament in the books, and more to learn from here!" – Gavin Haley.
Menlo is scheduled to compete in the Sonoma State Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, September 16 and 17.
