Stanford beach volleyball players Charlie Ekstrom and Sonny Villapando reached the third round of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open qualifying tournament on Thursday, coming up short of reaching the main draw.
The 57th-seeded duo opened with a 21-16, 21-11 victory over Pepperdine senior Kaity Bailey and Waves' sophomore Maddy Bailey.
Ekstrom and Villapando then came back to upset eight-seeded Cecilia Agraz and Agnieszka Pregowska in a marathon, 23-21, 21-23, 15-13. Agraz graduated from Fresno State seven years ago and Pregowska graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2008.
Loyola Marymount grad Heather (Hughes) McGuire and North Carolina alum Branagan Fuller stopped Ekstrom and Villapando 27-25, 21-14.
