The Priory girls' soccer team improved its lead in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) with a big 1-0 victory over third-place Menlo on Thursday. The victory gives the Panthers (8-1, 12-4-1) 24 points and a four-point lead over second-place Sacred Heart Prep (6-0-2). The loss for the Knights (4-2-2, 8-4-4) virtually knocks them out of the championship race.
Should Menlo finish third, it will play the winner of the WBAL Skyline Division in a playoff for the league's third Central Coast Section berth. That appears likely for the Knights with Priory and SHP all but assured of the top two spots.
Adriana Cortes drilled the game-winner in the 32nd minute to lift the Panthers and ruin the Knights, who have just four matches remaining. Priory outshot Menlo in the first half, 11-1, while the Knights held the advantage in the second half, 6-2.
Priory senior keeper Dani Boross stood out defensively along with defenders Courtney Lee and Molly Simpson, a freshman. Priory coach Armando del Rio solidified his defense with four players after the first 10 minutes of the second half.
