The Gunn girls' soccer team maintained a five-point lead over second-place Santa Clara in the SCVAL El Camino Division race following a 2-0 victory over visiting Wilcox on Wednesday evening. The Titans improved to 7-0-2 in league for 23 points and are 9-5-3 overall. Santa Clara is 5-0-3 for 18 points with third-place Saratoga a point back at 5-2-2.
The Titans scored in the seventh minute against Wilcox when Erin Robinson made an attacking run up the left flank and unleashed a low shot on goal away from the keeper. The shot rebounded off the far post, but Eleanor Greely was in perfect position to tap the ball into the net. In the second half, Gunn scored an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Taylor Gardiner sent a thru ball to Nikki Bahlman at midfield. Bahlman broke away from her defender and finished with a driven shot. For the game, Gunn had 13 total shots taken by nine different players.
Gunn has a winnable match next Wednesday at Lynbrook (3:30 p.m.) before hosting Santa Clara on Feb. 6 (5:30 p.m.) in a match that could decide the league title.
