The Priory girls' soccer team took over sole possession of first place in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) following a 3-1 victory over Castilleja at the Mayfield Soccer Complex on Tuesday. The Panthers improved to 7-1 in league (11-4-1 overall) and now has 21 points. Second-place Sacred Heart Prep (6-0-2) has 20. Castilleja fell to 1-6-1 in league (3-8-2 overall).
The match was tied at halftime following goals by Priory's Adriana Cortes (assist Alyson Perna) and Castilleja's Emily Mosbacher (assist Emily Colvin). The Panthers moved ahead with a strong second-half performance. Cortes got the eventual game-winning goal on a great individual play and Alex Schnable provided an insurance goal with a one-on-one play following an assist from Zoe Ciupitu. Senior Leslie Barkmann helped control the midfield to solidify Priory's attack and defense.
Priory will host third-place Menlo (4-1-2) on Thursday (3 p.m.) in another important match.
