The West Bay Athletic League girls' soccer race likely has another new leader following Sacred Heart Prep's 3-3 deadlock with host Menlo in a big Foothill Division match. The Gators (6-0-2, 9-3-4) started the day atop the division standings, but likely fell a point behind Priory, an expected winner over Casilleja. Menlo, meanwhile, dropped to 4-1-2 (8-3-4) following its second tie with SHP this season.
The Gators struck first when Lizzy Weisman broke free in the first half, but that only seemed to fire up the Knights. They retaliated with back-to-back goals, the first by Kelly Cavan and the second by Natalie Johnson following a scramble after a corner kick.
Menlo took a 2-1 lead into halftime and was feeling pretty good about its effort until Weisman scored with just under 35 minutes left after a free kick by Abby Dahlkemper ricocheted off a wall of Menlo players to the waiting Weisman, who found herself one on one with Menlo keeper Lucy Herhold. Weisman punched it in for a 2-2 game.
Less than seven minutes later, Dahlkemper lofted a solid strike from about 25 yards out that went over the reach of Herhold for a 3-2 match. Menlo battled back and tied things again when Katie Howard took a nice pass and got past some defenders to score.
Both teams had opportunities to score after that. SHP senior Kira Abe missed a near point-blank shot with 9:19 left and Dahlkemper fired a hard shot right at Herhold with 6:45 to play. Menlo nearly got the winner with 6:23 to play when Cavan fired a shot that was tipped by SHP keeper Abby Jones. The ball hit the crossbar, bounced back to hit Jones, and nearly went back in the cage.
Finally, with just 3:50 left, Menlo's Sarah Swig took a hard shot that Jones again tipped, this time over the crossbar.
Menlo continues its tough week by taking on first-place Priory on Thursday at 3 p.m.
