Menlo 7, William Jessup 2
Date of competition: Wednesday, April 24, 2019
After a soggy spring, the Menlo College Oaks finally got some warmth and sunshine for their final home regular season softball doubleheader of the year against William Jessup. It wasn't all sunshine for the Oaks, as they dropped an 8-6 decision in game one before coming back to win game two. Menlo improves to 20-28 on the season and finishes their GSAC season with a 11-13 record, while William Jessup finishes up at 19-19 and 11-13.
Game One: WJU 8, Menlo 6
The Oaks put up all six of their runs in the first two innings. Ariana Belarde and Lauren Harrison each singled to open the game and an error on Makenna Weiler's infield grounder allowed Belarde to score. Sarah Reyes, Mia Thompson, and Regina Juarez strung together back to back to back hits, with the latter two driving in runs. That put the Oaks ahead 4-1 through one. Jessup answered with a run in the second, but the Oaks added two more in the bottom half. With one out, Belarde and Harrison encored their back to back singles. Belarde scored on a wild pitch and Weiler singled Harrison home.
Patterson Breaks it Open
After a rocky third inning that allowed the Warriors to tie it up at six, it looked like Victoria Cervantes had settled down nicely, pitching a scoreless fourth and fifth inning. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off in the sixth. Cervantes walked a hitter and gave up a deep home run to put William Jessup ahead, 8-6.
Reyes Keeps 'em in it
Reyes was spectacular out of the bullpen, pitching two scoreless innings of one hit ball
Game Two: Menlo 7, WJU 2
Thank You, Regina
Senior Regina Juarez had a big game for the Oaks, going 2-2 at the plate with the lone extra base hit of the game for the Oaks, a double to right center in the second. Her final total between the two games: 3-6 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Thank You, Sarah
Reyes dominated in the circle for game two. She threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, five strikeouts, and two walks. This marked Reyes's tenth win this season, the second time in as many years she ended with double digit wins. She finished her senior day going 2-7 with a run and an RBI, while pitching nine innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits, while striking out six and walking two.
The Oaks play in the GSAC Softball Tournament. The Oaks will either be the three or four seed in the tournament and take on Hope International or William Jessup. The tournament will be played at OC Great Park in Irvine.
