In its most tightly contested and fastest dual meet of the season, the second-ranked Stanford women's swimming team (4-0, 17-0) used a victory in the meet's final event, the 400 free relay, to edge No. 7 and defending national champion Arizona, 150 1/2-147 1/2, on Saturday in a Pac-10 dual held at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson.
After Stanford's Liz Smith won the 400 IM, the Cardinal closed Arizona’s lead to two points, which meant the winner of the 400 free relay would win the meet outright.
Lara Jackson led off for Arizona and put her team in the early lead. Justine Schluntz and Anna Turner both held off charges from the Stanford relay team. As the fourth leg began, both teams were even. Stanford’s Julia Smit outpaced Taylor Baughman after the final turn and clocked a sizzling 47.82 to help Stanford win the event and the meet.
The exhilarating victory would not have been possible, however, without the clutch efforts of Smith and Breeden down the stretch. The duo combined to win the last two and three of the final four individual events, beginning with Smith’s victory in the 200 breast. A 2008 All-American in the event, she swam a 2:12.01 to hold off Arizona’s Julie Stupp (2:12.49) by .48-second. Smith then set the stage for the 400 free relay by dominating the field in the 400 IM, as her time of 4:14.91 was nearly a full three seconds better than anyone else.
