The Gunn girls' soccer team stayed atop the SCVAL El Camino Division standings by overcoming some challenging conditions and host Saratoga, 3-1, on Friday afternoon.
Despite playing in a constant drizzle, the Titans struck early in the third
minute when Eleanor Greely received a ball some 25 yards out with her back to goal. Greely turned and served a
ball to the right flank for Melissa Sun to run onto. Sun placed the ball away from the keeper inside the left far post for the score.
In the 25th minute, Gunn (6-0-2, 8-5-3) struck again when Kelly McKenna headed Nikki Bahlman’s corner kick into the left side of the net. As the rain grew heavier on the slick artificial turf, both teams had difficulty possessing and controlling the ball. The conditions led to a Saratoga goal in the 35th minute, when Gunn’s keeper Jessie Belfer pickup of a rolling ball slipped thru her hands and into the Gunn net.
However, Gunn quickly countered in the 37th minute with Emmiliese von Clemm providing a lofted serve into the box that Taylor Gardiner headed into the net for the third Gunn goal and a 3-1 advantage going into halftime.
Saratoga pressured hard in the second half with most of the play in Gunn’s field. Belfer quickly put aside the miscue of the first half and came up with excellent saves on two dangerous Saratoga fast breaks. Belfer’s sterling play in goal and the resolute Gunn defense kept Saratoga out of the net for the rest of the half to preserve the win.
Gunn continues league play with a home game against Wilcox on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
