The Palo Alto boys' soccer team moved closer to clinching the SCVAL De Anza Division title with a 2-0 victory over host Gunn on Friday night. Getting two goals from Spencer Sims, the Vikings improved to 7-0-1 in league (15-1-2 overall) and now have 22 points atop the standings.
Los Gatos had 15 points going into a scheduled match Friday, but was rained out and finds itself seven points behind the Vikings heading into Wednesday's match at Palo Alto at 3:30 p.m. A victory by the Vikings will all but clinch the division crown, barring a complete collapse by Paly in the final matches.
Sims gave Paly a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. A poor goal kick by Gunn resulted in a quick counter by the Vikings, with Sims taking a cross and finishing for a 2-0 lead in just 14 minutes. Gunn pushed hard after that, but Paly's tough defense and some close misses by the Titans kept the shutout intact. Gunn junior Michael Starr hit the left post with under five minutes to go and a Gunn header went over the top of the cage.
