Varsity Boys Soccer
Menlo 2, Harker 1
Date of competition: Friday, January 23, 2009
The Menlo boys' soccer team took advantage of wet field conditions and moved into a tie for first place in the West Bay Athletic League with a 2-1 triumph over host Harker on Friday. The Knights (5-1-3, 8-3-4) are now deadlocked with Sacred Heart Prep (6-2) atop the league standings. The Gators had their match with host Priory postponed due to wet grounds.
Both Menlo and Sacred Heart Prep have 18 points while Harker remains with 16 and Priory with 11. The Knights and Gators meet on the final day of the regular season on Feb. 9.
Friday's win for Menlo was hard fought and a thoroughly deserved win for the Knights after disappointing games against Sacred Heart Prep (a 3-2 loss) and King's Academy (a 0-0 deadlock). Menlo came out with renewed vigor and took an early lead on a powerful header from senior Charles LeMoullac after a dangerous free kick from senior Joe Pinsker.
Harker replied early in the second half with a sensational shot into the upper net, but Menlo was not to be denied and showed the kind of heart that had made the Knights successful early in the season. Hard work from junior forward Connor Barnett and sophomore Cristian Fajardo led to a penalty kick that senior Michael Walker calmly converted. From there, Menlo refused to give an inch the rest of the way. It was a tremendous team performance, according to Menlo coach Giles Scott, who pointed out the contribution of junior Jackson Badger in the middle of the field, who "was especially impressive," Scott said.
