It was an inauspicious start to the second half of the PAL Bay Division girls' soccer season for host Menlo-Atherton on Thursday as the Bears had to settle for a 3-3 deadlock with visiting San Mateo. The Bears (2-4-2, 5-7-3) had opened league play against San Mateo on Dec. 9 and posted a 1-0 victory. Since that match, M-A has gone 1-4-2.
Menlo-Atherton held a 3-2 lead until San Mateo scored in the 67th minute of the 70-minute match for the final verdict.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Jennifer Kirst off an assist from sophomore Gillian Collom. The Bears made it 2-0 in the second half on a goal by Tiffany Kung (assist to Tess Cain). San Mateo scored four minutes later and again just two minutes after that, but M-A answered when Katie Flanagan hooked up with Collom for a 3-2 lead, with Collom getting her ninth goal of the season.
The Bears now face a tough week ahead with a match at first-place Burlingame on Tuesday followed by a home match against always tough Carlmont next Thursday, both at 3 p.m.
