Palo Alto's problems continued on a muddy grass field on Wednesday as the Vikings dropped further in the SCVAL De Anza Division girls' soccer race following a disappointing 5-1 loss to host Monta Vista. The Vikings (2-3-2, 6-5-4) now have given up 10 goals in back-to-back losses on grass fields.
Paly dropped into a tie for fourth with Los Gatos (2-2-2), one point out of third and seven points behind first-place Homestead (5-2), which visits Palo Alto on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
While the Vikings did play without starting goalie Alex Kershner, sidelined by illness, junior backup Caroline McDonnell did come up with 12 saves, much of the blame for the big defeat had to be placed on the defenders for allowing four first-half goals.
The Vikings changed things up in the second half with sophomore Gracie Cain brought in to shore up the defense. The Matadors managed only one goal after intermission. Paly's lone goal came in the first half when senior Sammi Bengston had a nice through ball to junior Kelly Jenks, who finished for 2-1 match. Monta Vista, however, answered back with two more goals to put the match out of reach.
