The Gunn girls' soccer team strengthened its hold on first place in the SCVAL El Camino Division with a solid 4-1 victory over visiting Milpitas on Wednesday evening. Gunn improved to 5-0-2 in league (7-5-3 overall).
The Titans got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute when Megan Clendenin’s free kick was cleared directly to Melissa Sun on the right side. Sun took a solid strike from 25 yards out that hit the upper half of the net over the keeper’s reach. Gunn struck again in the 20th minute with Libby Burch making a firm cross from the right side that found Kelly McKenna inside the penalty area.  McKenna finished with a header for a 2-0 Gunn lead.
In the 33rd minute, Erin Robinson attacked from the left side, delivering a cross into the area that Taylor Gardiner finished easily. Milpitas' best threat in the first half came on a fast break resulting in a 1 on 1 against Gunn keeper Jessie Belfer.  Belfer made a strong challenge out of her box and forced the shot wide to keep Milpitas off the score board.
In the second half, Milpitas got a goal back in the 43rd minute, intercepting a back pass in Gunn’s half and finishing quickly. However, Gunn answered with a goal of its own in the 55th minute, with Robinson delivering a thru ball to feed Nikki Bahlman on a quick breakaway. Bahlman finished with authority for the final Gunn tally.
Gunn will hit the road to face Saratoga on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
