The Palo Alto boys' soccer team strengthened its hold on first place in the SCVAL De Anza Division with a 2-0 victory over visiting Monta Vista on Wednesday. The Vikings improved to 6-0-1 in league (19 points) and 14-1-2 overall while the Matadors fell to 2-5-1 in league.
Following a scoreless first half, Paly finally got on the board on an overlapping run by John Christopherson (assist), who then crossed the ball to Greg Stewart for the goal with 8:30 elapsed. Paly made it 2-0 when Spencer Sims scored on an an assist from Adam
Zernik at the 25:00 mark.
"This was a close game for the first half," said Paly coach Don Briggs. "It was a defensive battle with both teams having a total of five shots on goal. Paly came out stronger in the second
half with several near-scoring opportunities, including shots off the post and one off the cross bar."
Briggs said his defense "came back to form with another shutout. Peter Johnson did a nice job of directing the defense and had two saves. Ryan Holland, Riley Smith, John Christopherson, and Mark Raftrey were key defensive players in preserving the
shutout."
