Menlo 3, Ottawa Arizona 0
Date of competition: Saturday, February 16, 2019
Golden State Athletic Conference
at Menlo d. Ottawa Arizona. 25-17, 25-23, 25-17.
History repeated itself for the Menlo College men's volleyball team this week and that was a good thing. The Oaks knocked off UC Santa Cruz for the first time in program history earlier this week and followed that by sweeping Ottawa University Arizona for the first time in program history. Menlo hit .312 as a team, which helped produce the three-set win. The Oaks improve to 6-3 on the season and 1-2 in GSAC play while the Spirit fall to 5-5, 0-3.
Direito and Venezia Own the Net
The Oaks received contributions from both middle blockers: Chase Direito and Dominic Venezia. Venezia hit at an 80 percent clip and had three blocks. Direito recorded seven kills, hitting at a .545 clip. He added three blocks as well.
Dhothar Dominates OUAZ Once Again
In his four career matchups with OUAZ, Akash Dhothar has endeared himself to the Spirit. After combining for 40 kills in three matches vs. the Spirit last year, Dhothar delivered a team high 12 kills and 5 digs. Although Akash hasn't been quite as prominent as an attacker for the Oaks since the addition of Edin Ibrahimovic, he's proven to be a good source of momentum when the Oaks have needed him.
End the Weekend Strong
The Oaks closed out the match tonight on a dominant set three. Menlo hit .414 in set three and were able to dominate the Spirit, leading by as many as 10 before the set ended 25-17. Dhothar had four kills in the set, while Direito, Collin Jordan and Venezia each added three.
Menlo returns to Haynes-Prim on Friday to take on University of Saint Katherine. The Firebirds are 2-4 on the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
