Overcoming terrible field conditions and the absence of three starters, the Priory girls' soccer team nonetheless pulled out a 1-0 victory over host Notre Same-San Jose in a West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) match on Tuesday.
The Panthers (5-0, 9-3-1) held on to first place despite not having Adriana Cortes (illness), Zoe Ciupitu (back) and Darrah Shields (back) available. Despite playing at nearly half strength, Priory got on the board in the first five minutes when Leslie Barkmann sent a pass to Sarah Montgomery, who blasted a shot into the upper corner.
"Notre Dame-SJ did not record a shot," said Priory coach Armando Del Rio. "We simply need to finish our opportunities much better."
Priory actually had another goal, but the shot went through the net and the officials missed it, awarding a corneer kick instead. The Panthers will have their first-place status tested Thursday when they host Sacred Heart Prep (3-0-1, 6-3-3) at 3 p.m. The Gators are tied for second place with Menlo, both with 10 points. A loss by the Panthers, however, won't hurt at this point of the season due to their five-point lead.
