Varsity Girls Soccer
Wilcox 2, Gunn 2
Date of competition: Wednesday, January 7, 2009
The Gunn girls' soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw with host Wilcox in a SCVAL El Camino Division match on Wednesday. The Titans (2-0-1, 4-5-2) dominated possession throughout the match, but Wilcox struck for two quick goals before halftime.
The Chargers scored their first goal in the 36th minute off a fast break on the left side highlighted by a quick cut and shot from 18 yards out that hit the upper right corner of the net. Their second goal came seconds before halftime off a corner kick that went outside the penalty area but found a Wilcox player, who headed a looper into the net.
Facing an uphill battle, Gunn attacked aggressively the entire second half, finally being rewarded in the 45th minute when Megan Clendenin placed a thru ball to Eleanor Greely, who deftly dropped a pass back to a charging Taylor Gardiner, who tapped it in for the goal. After several good scoring opportunities, Gunn got the equalizer in the 66th minute when Nikki Bahlman’s cross from the left side into the penalty area found Gardiner, who finished confidently.
Gunn continues league play with a home game against Lynbrook on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
