It was payback time for the Palo Alto boys’ soccer team, which grabbed sole possession of first place in the SCVAL De Anza Division with a very big 3-0 victory over host Los Gatos on Wednesday.
The Vikings improved to 3-0 in league (11-1-1 overall) while knocking the Wildcats (2-1) from the unbeaten ranks. Los Gatos is the two-time defending league champion.
“This was an important game,” said Paly coach Don Briggs, who praised the work of his senior keeper, Peter Johnson, who had three saves and registered his third shutout in league play.
Paly's defense consisting of John Christopherson, Ryan Holland, Mike Hanabusa, and Mark Raftrey had solid consistent games to ensure the shutout. “This was a nice accomplishment, as Los Gatos had 25 goals in its past 10 games and was held scoreless for the first time this year,” Briggs said. Briggs also pointed out the contributions of Michael Hanabusa and Kevin Ashworth had key roles in keeping the Wildcats’ leading point-scorer and playmaker, Marc Tonkel, from scoring. He had 10 goals and five assists prior to Wednesday’s showdown. Paly took a first-half lead when Adam Zernik scored a header from the backpost, up in the left corner off a cross from Elliot Sanborn. In the second half, Sanborn scored off cross from Ashworth at the 20:00 mark. Eight minutes late, John Anderton scored off another pass from Ashworth. Palo Alto will host Santa Clara on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
