In a battle between two teams that reached the Central Coast Section Division III semifinals last season, visiting Priory scored early and played solid defense throughout while registering a 2-1 victory over host Menlo in a key West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) girls' soccer showdown on Tuesday.
The Panthers (3-0, 7-3-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead just moments into the match when Lauren Allen scored on a corner kick by Adriana Cortes. Priory took that lead into halftime, then made it 2-0 when Cortes blasted a shot over the reach of Menlo junior keeper Lucy Herhold midway through the second half.
Menlo (1-1-1, 5-3-3) kept things interesting when senior Madi Shove scored off an assist from Ginny Miller to make it a 2-1 match, but the Panthers' stout defense that included Melissa Perna, Courtney Lee and Molly Simpson held tough and repelled late attempts by the Knights.
