Varsity Girls Soccer
Palo Alto 3, Monta Vista 1
Date of competition: Wednesday, December 17, 2008
Getting all the goals it needed in the first half, the Palo Alto girls' soccer team opened its SCVAL De Anza Division season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Monta Vista on Wednesday. The loss for the Matadors was their first after eight straight wins.
It didn't take long for the Vikings (1-0, 5-1-3) to score. In the third minute, junior Kelly Jenks crossed the ball from the right and it fell in front of the net. Junior Maeve Stewart picked off the cross in the air and volleyed the ball into the net, surprising the Monta Vista keeper as the ball whooshed by her right shoulder.
The next two goals came from long range. In the 10th minute, senior Jessie Duller lofted a shot from roughly 25-30 yards away into the top right corner of the net and just out of the reach of the Monta Vista keeper. Nearly 30 minutes later, senior Sammi Bengston hit nearly the exact same shot from the same spot on the field for a 3-0 lead. Both were strong shots high enough to elude the Monta Vista goalie's fingertips and just low enough to clear the top crossbar.
Monta Vista started the second half like a team three goals down and took the action to Paly. That coincided with the Vikings having made some substitutions in addition to feeling comfortable, perhaps, with a three-goal lead. The Matadors scored 11 minutes into the second half and continued tp press the issue as Paly's defense was forced to raise its level of play to prevent another goal. Defenders like sophomores Gracie Marshall and Hannah Ohlson, junior Claire Skrabutenas and seniors Elizabeth Petit and Duller all played solidly in support of sophomore keeper Alex Kershner, who played 80 minutes -- allowing one goal in the second half. She had two saves in the first half and nine saves in the second, reflecting Monta Vista's stepped up offensive efforts.
