With senior Nikki Bahlman exploding for three goals, the Gunn girls' soccer team won its SCVAL El Camino League opener on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over host Milpitas.
Gunn opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with Bahlman volleying a corner kick from Mariah Cannon from 12 yards out. In the second half, Gunn scored three goals in rapid succession. In the 59th minute, Eleanor Greely and Bahlman found themselves in a two on one breakaway 30 yards from goal. Bahlman's dribbling drew the defender and keeper, then she slotted a square pass to Greely for a simple finish. Just one minute later, Greely returned the compliment by serving a lobbed ball to Bahlman on a fast break. Bahlman evaded the charging keeper and tapped the ball in for the third Gunn goal. In the 75th minute, Bahlman completed her hat trick by racing on to a missed clearance by a Milpitas defender and finishing for the final tally.
Gunn (1-0, 3-5-1) continues league play at home with a game with Saratoga Friday at 5:30 p.m.
