Varsity Boys Soccer
Menlo 4, Harker 2
Date of competition: Friday, December 12, 2008
The Menlo School boys' soccer team has a full head of steam and plenty of momentum following a 4-2 victory over visiting Harker in a West Bay Athletic League match Friday. That's the good news. The bad news is the Knights are now on holiday break and don't return to league play until January 2.
Menlo coach Gilles Scott needs to find a way to keep his team sharp between now and then, especially since Menlo apparently has found its groove while improving to 2-0 in league (4-2-1 overall).
Joe Pinsker gave Menlo a 1-0 first-half lead with an unassisted goal and Jonathan Melgar (with an assist from Michael Walker), gave the Knights enough for a tie with his first goal of the season. It was Charles Le Moullac (assist Sam Woolf) who provided the eventual winning goal -- his first this season -- and Walker added insurance with a penalty kick.
"Another strong showing from a rapidly improving Menlo team, which is now beginning to believe in itself," said Scott, who added that his team fell into its usual "modus operandi" -- a somewhat hesitant first half, followed by a dramatically more intense and energetic second 35 minutes.
