Getting three goals from junior Kelly Jenks, the Palo Alto girls’ soccer team routed host Santa Clara, 6-1, in a nonleague match on Wednesday. The Vikings (3-1-3) also got single goals from Maeve Stewart, Erika Hoglund and Sarah Brown.
Paly got on the board first when junior Sophie Cain crossed the ball from the left to Hoglund, a junior forward Erika Hoglund was standing front and center at the net waiting for the ball. Her shot went off the goalie’s fingertips and into the net. The winning goal came in the second half when Stewart, another junior, brought the ball forward and drilled a 35-yard pass to Jenks, who trapped the ball and quickly slid the ball past the keeper.
Jenks scored the third goal off an assist by senior Jessie Duller and finished off her hat trick when sophomore Gracie Cain passed the ball from the left side of the field directly to Jenks' feet, who juked out the Santa Clara keeper for the goal.
Paly sophomore keeper Alex Kershner played 55 minutes with three saves while allowing no goals. Santa Clara's goal came late and was from a direct kick awarded after a Paly foul.
