The Palo Alto Vikings were denied in their quest for a third consecutive Central Coast Section championship, falling to Los Gatos, 29-23, in the Medium School Division final on Saturday night at San Jose City College.
Faced with a six-point deficit late in the fourth quarter, the Vikings (9-4) tried to recreate the magic of a year ago when Will Brandin led a late touchdown drive to beat Menlo-Atherton in the CCS Large School title game. This time, however, Brandin was unable to lead that drive as he was intercepted, ensuring the victory for Los Gatos (10-3).
Los Gatos quarterback Nick Hirschman had a busy night as he threw for one touchdown and rushed for two more, including the winning touchdown.
For Palo Alto, senior running back Sam Tompkins-Jenkins provided most of the scoring with two touchdown runs, while Brandin also hooked up with Will Holder for a 72-yard touchdown.
Paly briefly led the game,23-21 when Holder banked a 22-yard field goal off to left upright, but Los Gatos immediately took it back on a nine-yard rush by Hirchman.
The loss is Paly second loss to Los Gatos in a CCS championship in the past four years. The setback also ended Paly's streak of section titles at two straight, while the victory for Los Gatos avenged a regular-season ending loss to the Vikings.
