There were a few long faces and bowed heads on the Sacred Heart Prep sideline as Sacred Heart Cathedral took to the field to celebrate its 38-21 victory Saturday in the Central Coast Section Small School Division championship game at San Jose City College.
But, that was a temporary condition. Despite coming up short in the last game of the season, there was too much to be proud of to leave the field too unhappy. It took until December for Prep, in its first season of competing in the CCS, to suffer its only loss and it took a forceful second half by Sacred Heart Cathedral to make that possible. The Irish, from the West Catholic Athletic League, finished 8-5.
The Gators (11-1-1) took a 14-14 tie into halftime and came within a few plays of making the game interesting late into the game. Instead, Cal-bound running back Desarte Yarnway overpowered the Gators with a 25-carry, 230-yard performance, including two touchdowns.
But Sacred Heart Prep competed well and had its chances throughout the game but there were early indications the going wouldn't be easy. There was an interception on the Gators' first possession and on its second possession Prep had a 17-play, 79-yard drive that ended with a failed run on fourth-and-goal from the one. Nevertheless, Prep scored first on an eight-yard run by quarterback Ryan Sakowski with 7:30 left in the half.
Yarnway answered with his two touchdowns within 2:30 of each other to stake the Irish to a 14-7 lead with two minutes left in the half. The Irish fumbled away their final possession of the half to defensive back Chris Cummings and Prep took advantage. Sakowski needed one play to complete a 34-yard scoring pass to Matt Bocci to tie the game at 14. But in the second half, turnovers, inability to convert third and fourth down situations and too much Yarnway doomed the Gators' championship hopes.
