There's a new champion of the Palo Alto Winter Classic, the St. Francis girls' soccer team. The Lancers earned that title by upending defending champion and host Palo Alto, 2-1, in overtime on Friday.
St. Francis (3-1-2) took a 1-0 lead when Kelly Jarvis scored off an assist from Cynthia Garcia. Palo Alto (2-1-3) tied the match in the second half on a goal by Emily Yeates. The teams then played two 10-minute overtimes. Stephanie Bell of St. Francis scored during the first overtime.
Paly sophomore keeper Alex Kershner had a remarkable 18 saves on the day. The match is officially a tie, since the Central Coast Section doesn't recognize overtimes or penalty-kick situations.
