Palo Alto junior Erika Hoglund gave her team the lead and later provided the winning goal as the Vikings held off Los Altos, 2-1, in the second round of the Palo Alto Winter Classic girls' soccer tournament on Tuesday at the Mayfield Soccer Complex.
Hoglund gave Paly (2-1-1) a 1-0 lead in the first half after taking a pass from Sammi Bengston and knocking it into the net from the left side. In the second half, Hoglund scored off a corner kick to make it a 2-0 game. She was serving up the ball to her teammates from the corner when the ball hit the far side post and ricocheted over the Los Altos keeper and into the net.
Los Altos scored off a corner kick near the end of the game, giving the Eagles' fans some hope. Paly pulled its defense together to preserve the win. The Vikings will play Priory today on the Paly football field at 4 p.m. A victory will clinch first place in the A Division and send the Vikings into the championship match, most likely against St. Francis, on Friday at the Paly football field at 4 p.m.
