Drac Wigo posted a hat trick to lead six Cardinal goal scorers as third-ranked Stanford retained the Steve Heaston Trophy, awarded annually since 1999 to the winner of the Big Splash, with a 9-8 victory over No. 4 California Saturday in Berkeley.
The victory was Stanford’s third straight in the series and improved the Cardinal’s advantage in the series to 6-4 since the trophy was first awarded.
Stanford (22-4, 6-2 MPSF) captured second place in the MPSF and the second seed in the conference tournament. The Cardinal plays Long Beach State in the first round of the conference tournament on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Pepperdine.
