Brown University volleyball rising senior Melissa Cairo and rising junior Elisa Merten will serve the Bears as captains for the 2017 season, Brown head coach Diane Short announced on Thursday.
Cairo earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors last fall. She has served as the Bears' starting libero over the last two seasons and has totaled 47 double-digit dig performances in her career. Last season, she ranked second in the Ivy League with 4.89 digs per set, tallied 5.48 digs per set in Ivy matches, and posted 10 or more digs in each of 20 matches.
Merten emerged as a versatile performer last fall with her triple-double at Dartmouth on Nov. 11 behind 27 digs, 17 assists, and 10 kills, exemplifying her multiple skill sets. A season ago, she played in all 92 sets, one of four Bears to do so, and recorded 3.38 assists, 2.04 digs, and 0.70 kills per set.
The duo and the Bears will open their 2017 season on Friday, Sept. 1.
