The Menlo girls' soccer team took advantage of a Palo Alto team missing six starters to register a season-opening 3-0 nonleague victory on Tuesday. Menlo junior Katie Baum scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the first half. That was followed by a goal from senior Madi Shove on an assist from Katie Howard. The Knights (1-0) took a 2-0 lead into the second half and added a final goal from senior Casey Finch (assist Shove).
Palo Alto (0-1) played without six starters who can't play until their club team commitments are completed at the end of November. The Vikings managed only one shot on goal in the first half, eight more in the second. Paly is back in action Wednesday, hosting Gilroy at 4 p.m.
