After suffering a pair of one-point losses to Saratoga during the SCVAL De Anza Division season, the Palo Alto girls' tennis team was determined not to let that happen for a third time in the Central Coast Section team semifinals Monday at Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos.
In that respect, the Vikings were successful. The final outcome, nonetheless, was the same as the No. 3-seeded Vikings dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 2 Saratoga. Palo Alto concluded its season at 21-4 while the Falcons (21-2) advance to face top-seeded Mitty in the CCS finals on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
"It's been a great season," said Paly coach Andy Harader, who took the Vikings the the CCS semifinals for the first time since Paly won the title in 1981. "It's been a very satisfying year."
Palo Alto is 43-5 in the past two seasons and loses only two seniors -- Lisa Ke and Vrinda Khanna. Ke and Khanna walked off the court a final time following a frustrating 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 loss that easily could have gone the other way. The Paly tandem held a 5-2 lead in the second set, but squandered that opportunity.
Ke and Khanna ended their match nearly at the same time as Paly's No. 3 doubles team of Lauren Mah and Christine Koepnick, who earlier had rallied from a first-set loss, won a second-set tiebreaker and forced a third set.
Palo Alto only trailed 3-2 when its No. 2 and 3 doubles teams took the court for their final sets. The outcome clearly was in doubt at that point with the Paly teams only needing to make some better shots. It just didn't happen. Mah and Koepnick also fell, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.
"It was just a point here and a point there," said Harader, finishing his 11th season with the Vikings. "Not being able to close it out is what we struggled with in these losses."
