Gunn 38, Lynbrook 18
Date of competition: Saturday, November 15, 2008
Gunn wrapped up what has been a fairly disappointing football season, going out on a positive note following a 38-18 thumping of Lynbrook on Saturday at Cupertino High. For the Titans (2-4, 2-8), the SCVAL El Camin Division finale was their best complete game of the season. The victory also marked the first time since the end of the 2003 season, when Gunn defeated Homestead 28-12, that the Titans won their final game of the season.
"It's too bad we couldn't have played that way all year," said Gunn coach Matt McGinn. "Tonight we played the way I thought we were capable of."
Gunn got out to a big early lead, but this time the Titans didn't squander it like they had in a loss the previous week, scoring two touchdowns in a little over a minute. First, Nikko Jackson scored from one yard out. Then, after a pooch kickoff by Tyler Ziebelman that was recovered on Lynbrook's 40, the Titans scored three plays later on a 13-yard pass from Yosh Patel to David Marson to give Gunn a 14-0 lead.
Midway in the second quarter Gunn had a 34 yard touchdown pass from Danny Luskin to Jon Zeglin nullified by a penalty but, two plays later, Ziebelman lofted a 39-yard punt to Lynbrook's 10 that the receiver fumbled and the ball rolled into the end zone and Marcus Anderson scored to give the Titans a 20-0 lead.
After Lynbrook scored to make a 20-6, Luskin lofted a 30-yard pass to Jon Zeglin, who caught it at Lynbrook's 40 and raced into the end zone to give Gunn a 26-6 lead. Lynbrook took advantage of a Gunn fumble and scored for a 26-12 game at halftime. When the Vikings took the second-half kickoff and drove down the field quickly, it appeared Gunn's lead would diminish further. But, Gunn's Jasper Dean came up with a big nine-yard loss on a screen pass that sent Lynbrook back to the Titans' 33. Lynbrook eventually turned the ball over on downs.
That was the final time that Lynbrook seriously challenged as Gunn took over at its own 33 and drove 67 yards with Zeglin scoring from two yards out for a 32-12 lead. The drive was highlighted by a 43 yard run by Jackson. Gunn's final tally came with 2:18 left to play when Mo Sonuga swept the right side from 10 yards out.
Throughout the second half, the Titans' defense came alive as seniors Jackson, Matt Bordbari, Scott Keenan, A.J. Tabalno and Anderson all made big plays. Other seniors bowing out in their final game were Chris Chan, Josh Chamo, Jermy Chamo, Chris Zeglin, Justin Nini, Brandon Cisneros, Nic Rengifo, Mark Waldrip and Justin Nini.
