The Menlo-Atherton boys' water polo team pulled the upset of the weekend in the Central Coast Section Division I quarterfinals by upsetting No. 2 Los Altos, 9-5, at Monta Vista High in Cupertino on Saturday. The Bears (15-13) came in seeded No. 7 while the Eagles had lost only once in 26 previous matches.
The Bears held Los Altos scoreless in the final quarter after building an 8-5 lead through the first three periods. Jed Springer, a 6-foot-9 junior, led M-A with four goals while Graham McClelland added three. Richard Hong and Eric Wright each had one goal for Menlo-Atherton, which got 13 save in goal from Nick Beltramo.
The Beas next will host No. 3 Bellarmine (17-9) on Tuesday in one of two semifinals in the Bears' pool. The Bells elimianted No. 6 Mountain View, 12-11.
