Varsity Boys Water Polo
Palo Alto 12, Salinas 11 (OT)
Date of competition: Tuesday, November 11, 2008
The Palo Alto boys' water polo team had to travel all the way to Monterey for a Central Coast Section opening-round match against Salinas on Tuesday night. Fortunately for the Vikings, the trip was worth it.
Despite having to work two extra periods, No. 9-seeded Palo Alto (18-10) held on for a 12-11 overtime win over No. 8 Salinas (15-9) at Santa Catalina High. Thomas Cho's goal in the second mandatory overtime period proved to be the decider.
Palo Alto got the game-winning goal during a 6-on-5 situation, ending a contest that went back and forth. Senior Tim Wenzlau scored five goals to lead the Vikings while senior goalie George Kadifa came up big with 19 saves.
Bobby Abbott, Alex Greene and Cho all tallied two goals to help send the Vikings into Saturday's quarterfinals against top-seeded St. Francis (19-7). Times and sites for the quarterfinals have yet to be decided.
