Varsity Boys Water Polo
Menlo 8, Menlo-Atherton 0
Date of competition: Saturday, November 8, 2008
The Menlo boys' water polo team has had its share of dominating performances this season. The latest one showed up Saturday when the Knights blanked Menlo-Atherton, 8-0, in the Peninsula Athletic League playoff finals at Burlingame High.
Menlo senior goalie Scott Platshon had 11 saves while recording the rare championship game shutout. Menlo's "swam-style' defense was a big factor with 13 total steals, led by seniors Will Tashman and James Balassone.
Balassone also led the scoring with three goals while Jack Foley added two to help give Jack Bowen his ninth consecutive PAL title in his nine years as Menlo's head coach. The Knights will take their 20-6 record into the Central Coast Section playoffs, which start next week. The Knights probably will be seeded No. 2 behind Sacred Heart Prep.
