A season of mistake-filled football cost Gunn once again as four lost fumbles helped erase a 19-point lead and send the Titans to a 29-19 defeat at the hands of visiting Santa Clara on Friday night. Gunn fell to 1-4 in the SCVAL El Camino Divsion (1-8 overall) on Senior Night.
Gunn grabbed a 19-0 lead in the first half after a 66-yard touchdown run by Josh Jackson, plus a 17-yard scoring run and two-yard TD plunge by Nikko Jackson, who finished the game with 119 yards rushing on 14 carries. Josh Jackson added 104 yards on six hauls to give Gunn its best rushing effort of the season.
The Gunn defense also stood out in the first half as David Marson and Blake Johnson had interceptions. Marson returned his interception 49 yards to the Santa Clara one-yard line. Two plays later, the Titans fumbled away a crucial scoring opportunity. Santa Clara wound up scoring with nine seconds left in the first half, making it a 19-6 game instead of a possible 26-0 contest.
When another costly lost fumble ended a long drive by Gunn in the third quarter, the door was open for the Bruins and they took advantage. Santa Clara scored with 9:25 left in the game to go ahead, then added an insurance score with 57 seconds left to further ruin Gunn's final home game of the season.
