In blustery, rainy conditions reminiscent of their CCS Division 1 win last March, the Menlo-Atherton varsity girls soccer team defeated the Carlmont Scots in a 3-0 shutout at M-A. Both teams played admirably in the bad weather, with the Bears dominating for most of the game. A cross pass by junior Mara Cavallaro to senior Katie Guenin in the mid first half gave the Bears their first goal. Just before the half, junior Diana Morales’ attempted shot was deflected by the goalkeeper, and Guenin deftly rebounded the ball for the 2nd M-A goal. The Bears sealed the deal in the second half with a pass from sophomore Yara Gomez Zavala to Morales, who dribbled through several Carlmont defenders to shoot a perfect ball high into the net. The Scots were unable to convert any of their attempted shots due to strong work by Bears sophomore goalie Breanna Sandoval and her defensive front (seniors Ali Sivilotti and Teresa Amor, juniors Grace Brieger and Olivia Shane, and sophomore Maggie Hall). Menlo-Atherton plays its 2nd league game against Burlingame HS (at Menlo-Atherton) on January 12th at 4 pm.
