Menlo-Atherton's Ali Silvilotti
Game Highlights: The defending CCS D1 Champion Menlo-Atherton varsity girls soccer team played their 3rd pre-season game against former Open Division 2nd place finisher, Mountain View HS, with a resulting 1-1 tie. In a well-matched game, the M-A Bears and Spartans battled for a score, with a defensive miscue resulting in a Spartans goal mid-way through the first half. The loss of sophomore defender Lizzie Young to an injury in the first minutes of the game was overcome by strong defensive work by seniors Ali Sivilotti, Allison Galbraith, and Teresa Amor, junior Grace Brieger, and sophomore Maggie Hall. Numerous saves by junior goalkeeper Breanna Sandoval kept the score at 0-1 at the half, with the MA Bears midfield (seniors Nicole Salz, Margaret Child, Alissa McNerney, junior Olivia Shane, and sophomore Yara Gomez Zavala) and forward players (senior Katie Guenin, juniors Josephine Cotto, Diana Morales, Mara Cavallaro, and Ella Missans) providing constant pressure. Gomez Zavila provided the assist to Morales in the mid 2nd half to score the tying goal. Guenin nearly scored the winning shot with a left-footed attempt in the waning minutes of the game, which was saved by the Spartans goalkeeper. The Bears next play Presentation HS at Presentation on December 17th at 10 am.
